Matt (Mattheartist) Lloyd's work could be classified perhaps as a form of expressionistic portraiture. Works of Tribute. More than mere "shout-outs", they call attention to more than just names. Much like Francis Bacon's popes, Toulouse-Lautrec's nightclub dancers, or Basquiat's boxers and ballers, these figures transcend the extents of naturalistic representation, and leave some doors open for your own interpretation. More here than meets the eye, as they say. His subjects seem to tend toward the Giants. The All-Timers, the Trail-Blazers, the Mold-Breakers. Many are so iconic as to be known to us all by only the One Name... Hendrix. Elvis. Bowie. Miles. Coltrane. Kubrick. The style at play here is an exploration, an invitation, a convergence of unguarded feelings. Effusive yet direct. Supercharged, and somehow still super-chill. Liquified and electrified, engaging to the point of attack, these portraits go right to the essence of character, gleefully trafficking in their subject's boundary-pushing nature.
